What is a micro influencer, anyway?
Definitions of micro and macro vary widely across the industry. Some brands define micro influencers as virtually anyone on social media who is not a Hollywood celebrity. Others define micro influencers as anyone with fewer than 1,000 total followers. But most marketers have converged around the idea that a micro influencer has a total reach between 5,000 and 100,000 followers. That’s still a pretty big range!
Marketing media is full of vague and often conflicting statistics about the relative engagement rates of micro vs. macro influencers. For this study, we examined approximately 70,000 random social posts created in 2017 by ~4,000 influencers across blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YoutTube, and Google+.
